Food trends tell the truth about what we really eat

trendingrecipesConsumers talk a good talk when it comes to alleged healthy eating.  The food trends that supposedly rule our choices include eating more simple foods, avoiding sugar, eating whole foods, avoiding harmful chemicals and highly processed food and looking for “clean” labeling.

Now check out the Pinterest list of the fastest trending recipes from top food blogs.  Here are some of them:

  • Red Lobster Cheddar Biscuits
  • Olive Garden Breadsticks
  • Olive garden Lemon Cream Cake
  • Cracker Barrel hashbrown casserole
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Mexican pizza
  • cookie dough
  • cookie reciipes
  • Panera Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • Monte Cristo sandwich
  • chocolate sheet cake
  • Potatoes au gratin
  • Applebee’s Maple Butter Blondie
  • homemade extra cheese pizza

Now there’s a list that reflects what we’re really eating.  A recent 12-year survey of food purchasing by over 150,000 households shows that more than half our calories come from ultra-processed foods — multiple ingredients processed into industrially formulated products.  More than 75% of foods were processed in some way. So much for whole, simple foods.

Is this depressing or comical?  Probably both.  People always talk big about healthy habits.  If you believe all those consumer surveys about health, everyone exercises 2 hours a day, vigorously, and eats nothing but boiled chicken and raw broccoli.  I guess the main message is this: don’t let those surveys make you feel guilty for not exercising 2 hours a day and living on chicken a broccoli.  It’s all baloney.
