PCOS Cookbook: interview with Angela Grassi

PCOSbook

Polycystic Ovary Syndrone.  It might not be on everyone’s radar screen, but it should be a consideration for women dealing with infertility, excess weight, hormonal imbalance and insulin sensitivity issues.   The hormone imbalances cause many women to develop multiple small cysts on their ovaries, hence the name PCOS. Lifestyle, including nutrition and diet, is one part of treatment. For some women, it might be the main treatment.

Registered Dietitian Angela Grassi, MS RD LDN is the founder of the PCOS Nutrition Center, and an expert on PCOS.  She published her first book on the topic, “PCOS: The Dietitian’s Guide” in 2007, after dealing with this syndrome herself for many years.  Because lifestyle factors play a major role in management of PCOS, and Grassi has developed a set of diet and nutrition guidelines for women who want to take charge of the problem.   Her most recent book — The PCOS Nutrition Center Cookbook — aims to help women implement those guidelines, with menus and recipes.

I spoke with Grassi recently about her new cookbook.  We started by discussing PCOS: what it is and how it’s diagnosed, and moved on to talk about lifestyle factors that impact PCOS symptoms.  She feels that many women aren’t used to eating many fruits and vegetables, as well as beans.  She emphasizes healthy fats from nuts, avocado and oils.   I asked her to name 3 recipes from the cookbook that she likes to make.  They are:

  1. Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Smoothie
  2. Grilled Salmon with Pineapple Mango Salsa
  3. Black Bean Cakes

In addition to recipes, there are menu plans, grocery shopping tips and some discussion of nutrition factors that relate to PCOS.  The cookbook will certainly be helpful to women dealing with PCOS symptoms, but it’s also just a very good cookbook for anyone who wants to follow a more whole foods diet.
